We rarely have the television on when E is awake, so we don't really need our TV to be right in the center of our home. Our use of the TV room is basically limited to evenings after E is in bed, and the occasional Saturday/Sunday morning. Given our utilization, the room is pretty ideal - tucked away, but still immediately adjacent to the kitchen. The open door you see in the picture above leads into the kitchen.
So the TV room serves as sort of a pass-through from one side of the house to the other. It's big enough that the furniture and TV are out of the traffic pattern though, and so it sort of serves as a combination room and hallway, if you will.
There's a narrow wood and metal console table along the far left wall, with a fuzzy little Nate Berkus for Target stool beneath it for extra seating. I so wish I had another stool like this one so I could have a pair, but Target sold out of them super fast and I never was able to track down a mate. I guess I could check ebay, but haven't gone that far 'round the bend just yet :)
The sofa is a leather sectional that we also had in our old house.
It's perfectly broken in and is roomy enough for all of us (including Murphy, of course) to lounge on at once. I tend to like leather furniture for pets and kids, and of course we have both, so this is great.
In the old house we had the sofa in a room that was decorated primarily in warm reds and yellows. In this house, I wanted to go with cooler greens and blues, and the turquoise rug, green ottoman, and patterned window shade and pillows really helped bring the new color scheme all together.
The pillows are from West Elm, Crate & Barrel, and Etsy. Just a mix of patterns and colors all in the turquoise/navy/chartreuse family.
The artwork in this room is a mix of old and new. The painting above the sofa (seen above) is from a local shop here in town that has some really interesting pieces. I wanted something that would provide interest and texture but in a quieter way, given all the color found elsewhere in the room. When I saw this piece, I knew it was just the thing.
The bear piece (in second photo) is a watercolor by Dean Crouser, and it's so cool. B and I both really love it and I'm glad we found a spot for it where we'd see it all the time.
Of course we also have a lot of family photographs in this room as well.
The rug is hard to photograph, so here's a picture of it from the Rugs USA website:
It's has a really cool ombre effect from the center out in pretty shades of turquoise, and is a thick wool which makes it super comfy and soft to walk on. This picture of it looks like I filtered the bejeezus out of it, but I did not - it's just supremely hard to photograph.
The ottoman is a gorgeous shade of chartreuse velvet, and I really love it.
I think it was the first piece I ordered for this room (from Urban Outfitters) and I basically built the room design around it.
E's adorable little chair is from Pottery Barn Kids:
She basically never sits in it, but she does like to drag it around the house from room to room, so I guess that's something?
The console table under the TV is super old from Pottery Barn, as is the end table.
I had a matching coffee table as well, which I have since donated. I remember being sooooo into these tables when I purchased them back in the mid-2000s. They are not what I would choose today, but there are lots of other items on my want-to-purchase list before replacing perfectly fine tables, so they're staying for now.
Most of the accessories in this room are from local shops, HomeGoods, and Target.
I talked about the roman shade in this post. I really like the pattern of it in here and especially love the fun pom-pom trim! We usually have it open about halfway as you see below. This room gets a little dark, so it's nice to have a little light coming through those windows.
Whenever we are ready to tackle the outdoor renovations, I think I'll probably convert these windows into french doors (behind them is our screened porch) so we can more easily access the outside. I thought about doing that during this renovation, but decided to just wait and see how we live in our house before going through with it.
Now that we've been here for a few months, I do think that would make sense, but I've also thought about down the road when E is older we might want more of an open concept (#HouseHunters). So, what we could do is take out a couple of walls and make the TV room, office, and kitchen into one large kitchen/great room area, with doors then leading out to the screened porch and patio beyond.
I think the layout of our house would easily allow us to do that, but obviously that would be another major project, and having just finished one big renovation, it's going to be a while before we tackle another one.
For the time being, I like having separate rooms rather than one big open room, and think this TV room works perfectly for our purposes.
